Job Summary:

The Local Plant Operator is responsible for performing routine patrols, monitoring power-generating units, and ensuring safe and efficient plant operations in line with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). This role includes identifying abnormalities, reporting plant conditions, and carrying out field operations as directed by the control room team.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Patrols & Equipment Inspection:
    • Regularly inspect assigned equipment, including boilers, turbines, condensers, feedwater systems, cooling systems, and auxiliaries.
    • Look for signs of leaks, unusual sounds, vibrations, abnormal temperatures, and pressure variations.
    • Report any safety hazards, faults, or inconsistencies in plant operations.
  • Field Operations:
    • Operate manual equipment such as valves, pumps, and drainage/vent systems.
    • Monitor auxiliary systems, including fuel, cooling water, and lubrication systems.
    • Carry out plant shutdowns and start-ups as instructed, following field-based procedures.
  • Safety & Compliance:
    • Adhere to safety protocols, including identifying hazards, performing risk assessments, and following emergency response procedures.
    • Participate in safety drills, toolbox talks, and mandatory compliance training.
    • Maintain a clean and hazard-free work environment by following plant housekeeping standards.
  • Reporting & Documentation:
    • Document equipment status, observations, and any actions taken in the shift logbook.
    • Communicate plant conditions, deviations, and interventions to the control room operator.
    • Provide comprehensive handover reports to the incoming shift team.
  • Maintenance Support:
    • Assist the maintenance team by preparing equipment for servicing, ensuring proper isolation and access.
    • Offer real-time feedback on equipment performance and potential issues.
    • Support troubleshooting activities by helping technical teams with field assessments.
  • Emergency Response & Troubleshooting:
    • Execute emergency shutdown/start-up procedures in coordination with the control room team.
    • Respond to plant trips, leaks, and equipment failures with appropriate field interventions.
    • Participate in fire drills and emergency preparedness training.

Education & Work Experience:

  • Minimum OND (Ordinary National Diploma) or a Technical Certificate in Mechanical, Electrical, or Power Plant Engineering.
  • 0 to 2+ years of experience in power generation plants, refineries, or heavy industrial plants.
  • Experience in steam turbine operations or thermal power plants is a plus.

Technical Skills & Knowledge:

  • Basic understanding of power plant processes, including steam cycles, boiler operations, and cooling systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret gauges for pressure, temperature, flow, and P&ID diagrams.
  • Familiarity with safety regulations, permit-to-work systems, and emergency shutdown protocols.
  • Basic troubleshooting skills for pumps, valves, pipes, and auxiliary equipment.
