Job Summary:

The Risk Advisor’s main responsibility is to support the GM, Risk & Strategy by evaluating and monitoring the company’s trading activities to ensure alignment with OTD’s strategic goals and vision. In this fast-paced role, the advisor will oversee trade processes, identify and mitigate risks in real-time, maintain a robust internal control system, ensure data integrity within trading software, assist in process reviews, conduct internal audits, and report on key risk indicators. The role also involves managing additional tasks as assigned by senior management.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Risk Identification & Assessment:
    • Review and update the company’s risk management framework to ensure alignment with the organization’s strategic goals and regulatory requirements.
    • Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of internal control frameworks and suggest areas for improvement.
    • Identify, assess, and prioritize internal and external risks (market, credit, operational) and communicate them clearly across the organization.
    • Monitor macroeconomic, geopolitical, and fiscal risks, advising on risk mitigation strategies in collaboration with departments like Trades, Operations, Finance, Legal, and Governance.
  2. Price Risk Management & Deal Desk:
    • Assess exposures related to product pricing, acquisition, storage, and regional or seasonal arbitrages.
    • Review P&L with traders and back-office teams, track trading positions, and assess daily profit/loss and margin requirements.
    • Manage deal entries in the commodity trade risk management software for both derivatives and physical trades.
  3. Monitoring & Compliance:
    • Act as the systems administrator for the commodity trade risk management software, ensuring compliance with procedures and performing periodic audits.
    • Oversee risk personnel in different regions and provide guidance on deal structuring and exposure management.
    • Evaluate and report daily deviations from established internal controls and provide actionable recommendations that balance risk management and organizational objectives.
  4. Communication & Collaboration:
    • Serve as a liaison for risk personnel in other regions and act as an internal consultant to traders and back-office functions.
    • Participate in financial reconciliation meetings with NOCs and trading counterparts.
    • Foster open communication with stakeholders across departments to discuss and address risk-related concerns.
    • Effectively communicate complex risk-related concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders and manage any conflicts professionally.
  5. Scope of Responsibility & Accountability:
    • Develop reports and analyses on trade activities.
    • Maintain trade trackers and monitoring schedules.
    • Document policies and procedures for OTD functions.
    • Ensure the integrity of the commodity trading risk management system and manage filing systems, both physical and electronic.
    • Monitor market, operational, and credit risks in accordance with the company’s Risk Management Policy.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • A degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field.
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience in a structured business environment, with a strong understanding of oil industry markets and at least three years of experience in business process development, risk management, internal controls, and financial statement reviews.
  • Risk certifications (e.g., IRM, GARP, CMA, CERA, COSO ERM) are advantageous.
  • Experience with a Big 4 audit firm is required.

Required Knowledge & Skills:

  • Deep knowledge of the oil and gas industry and global markets.
  • Expertise in commodities and derivatives trading (oil, gas products, forwards, futures, swaps, OTCs).
  • Proficiency in trading platforms and market analysis tools (e.g., Bloomberg, Platts, Refinitiv/Reuters).
  • Strong statistical and qualitative analysis skills.
  • Familiarity with risk management and internal control frameworks (e.g., COSO).
  • Ability to build relationships and network with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, creativity, and a passion for continuous learning.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and report-writing skills.
  • High emotional intelligence, self-discipline, and the ability to work effectively within teams.

  • Timeliness in capturing trades into the trade software.
  • Effective resolution of quality issues in trading operations.
  • Compliance with operational policies, procedures, and service standards.
  • Timeliness and effectiveness of investigations and recommendations.
  • Minimal queries from regulatory authorities and external audits.
