Position Overview
Under the supervision of the Director of Clinical Services, the Histotechnology Scientist (also known as Histotechnologist or Histotechnician) plays a key role in preparing tissue samples for microscopic examination, aiding in the diagnosis of various conditions, including cancer and infections. The role includes reporting results to physicians through the Electronic Medical Record system.
Key Responsibilities
- Tissue Processing: The Histotechnology Scientist will receive tissue samples from surgeries or biopsies, preparing them by fixing, embedding, sectioning, and staining to preserve their structure and enhance cellular details for analysis.
- Slide Preparation: Responsible for slicing tissues into thin sections (often a few microns thick) and mounting them on slides. The scientist will apply stains to highlight different cell structures and any abnormalities present in the tissue.
- Microscopy and Analysis: Collaborates with pathologists to ensure tissue samples are properly prepared for accurate diagnosis, assisting in microscopy and the examination of the slides.
- Quality Control: Ensures that procedures are executed with precision, maintaining high-quality results. This includes verifying the integrity of tissue sections, adherence to staining protocols, and ensuring slides are clear and accurate.
- Laboratory Maintenance: Responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment, ensuring stock of reagents and supplies, and following safety protocols for handling hazardous materials like formaldehyde.
- Additional Duties: Any other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science with a specialization in Histology.
- Valid license from the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria and the Histology Society of Nigeria.
- National Youth Service or Exemption Certificate.
Experience
- A minimum of two years of experience as a Histotechnology Scientist in a Pathology Laboratory.
- Must be a committed Christian.
- Ability to teach and train others.
- Proficiency with modern techniques for processing and reporting slides (e.g., Microvisioneer system).
- Strong computer skills with working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, and office equipment.
